Dakota Levi Simmons, 24, Tragically Dies Following Standoff in Gainesville, GA
The Gainesville community is grieving the tragic loss of 24-year-old Dakota Levi Simmons, who died after a tense standoff with law enforcement on March 20, 2026. The situation unfolded late Thursday night, when a woman called 911 from a home near Briarwood Drive and Skyline Drive, fearing for her safety. Officers responded and discovered Simmons inside the house with a woman and two children.
As police moved in, Simmons opened fire, striking one officer in the chest. Fortunately, the officer’s protective gear and a radio mic deflected the bullet, saving his life. The officer was taken to the hospital but has since been released. After a brief exchange of gunfire, Simmons retreated deeper into the home, prompting a three-hour standoff. Law enforcement attempted to negotiate with Simmons, but he continued to fire from inside.
Just before dawn, Simmons stepped outside and exchanged gunfire with police once more. This time, he was fatally shot.
