Donika Gocaj Remembered After Fatal Midtown Manhattan Manhole Fall Near East 52nd Street And Fifth Avenue
Donika Gocaj, a 56-year-old mother and grandmother from Briarcliff Manor, New York, died after falling into an uncovered manhole in Midtown Manhattan late Monday night, May 18, 2026.
The incident happened around 11:20 p.m. near East 52nd Street and Fifth Avenue after Donika stepped out of a parked car.
First responders pulled Donika from the opening and took Donika to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where the injuries proved too severe.
Loved ones remember Donika as a devoted family member who recently celebrated a son’s wedding in Cancun, Mexico, and brought steady care to family milestones.
Con Edison has confirmed an investigation into how the manhole remained uncovered, while the New York City Medical Examiner continues work to confirm the cause of death.
