Jonathan Toxtle Zacarias, Gabriel Toxtle Zacarias, And Beancy Rivas Flores Remembered After Interstate 40 Wrong-Way Crash In Sampson County

Jonathan Toxtle Zacarias, 21, Gabriel Toxtle Zacarias, 20, both of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Beancy Rivas Flores, 14, died early Saturday, May 9, 2026, on Interstate 40 in Sampson County.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the two-vehicle crash happened at about 2:41 a.m. near the 344-mile marker in the eastbound lanes near Newton Grove.

Investigators reported that a red Chevrolet Camaro traveled westbound in the eastbound lanes and struck a black Honda Accord head-on.

Trooper Tew responded to the scene, where Jonathan Toxtle Zacarias, Gabriel Toxtle Zacarias, and Beancy Rivas Flores died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The Honda driver sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville for emergency treatment.

Interstate 40 eastbound remained closed for several hours as crews worked at the scene before officials reopened the roadway.

Authorities continue to investigate what led the Camaro to enter the interstate in the wrong direction.
