Patricia Shepard Remembered After Fatal Mistaken-Identity Incident At Hammond Chevron Gas Station

Patricia Shepard, 50, died early Thursday, June 4, 2026, at a Chevron gas station on Highway 190 near Westin Oak Drive in Hammond.

Hammond police said officers arrived at 1:15 a.m. and found Shepard inside a parked gray sedan at a gas pump.

Authorities said a white sedan stopped nearby, two suspects got out, and 70 to 80 rounds struck the gray sedan before the suspects left westbound toward I-55.

Police Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr. said investigators believe the suspects targeted another person and mistook the vehicle’s occupant for that person.

Bergeron said Shepard had been getting a ride home from work when the incident occurred.

Investigators said the white sedan had been taken during a carjacking in McComb, Mississippi, on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, and detectives traveled there while pursuing leads.

Memorial service details will be announced later by family members.
