Calvin L. Holley, 52, Remembered After Fatal Interstate 294 Work Zone Incident In Des Plaines Before Dawn
Chicago mourns Calvin L. Holley, a 52-year-old Illinois Tollway maintenance worker who died early Saturday, May 30, 2026, while repairing potholes on Interstate 294 in Des Plaines.
Authorities said the incident happened at about 4:26 a.m. near milepost 41.5 on the southbound side, where Holley worked inside a designated construction zone.
A vehicle entered the area and struck Holley, while two other Illinois Tollway workers also received hospital treatment, with conditions not publicly released.
The Cook County Medical Examiner identified Holley, who lived in Chicago and served the Illinois Tollway for two years as an equipment operator and laborer.
Officials closed all southbound lanes between Dempster Street and Touhy Avenue for several hours before reopening the highway around 11:30 a.m.
Illinois Tollway leaders remembered Holley as a respected and valued team member who helped keep roads safer for thousands of travelers.
Memorial and funeral service details will be announced later by family members.
