Authorities identified 51-year-old Bruce Wagner and 49-year-old Steve Spenle as the Michigan Department of Transportation workers who died on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, on US-127 near West Holt Road in Mason, Michigan.
Investigators said both workers carried out active roadway duties when a 24-year-old DeWitt driver lost control of a vehicle and struck them in the work zone.
Emergency crews arrived quickly and tried to save Wagner and Spenle, but officials pronounced both workers dead at the scene.
The driver survived and went to a nearby hospital in critical condition, while officials continued to review speed as a possible factor.
